Family Planning

All of our Doctors and Nurses can give you expert contraceptive advice including oral contraception and depot (injectable) contraceptive preparations Condoms are available free of charge from the practice nurse.

Coil Fitting

We are now able to offer routine coil (intrauterine contraceptive device or IUCD) fittings here at the surgery in Bury Knowle. If you would like to consider this as a form of contraceptive please make a 20min appointment to discuss it with Dr Holden or Dr Johnston. We would then need to book you in at the appropriate time in your cycle (ideally be 3-14 days into your menstrual cycle)
to have this fitted (30min appointment with Dr Holden/Dr Johnston & a Practice Nurse). You can still have a coil fitted at the Family Planning Clinic (Alec Turnbull Clinic in Cowley Road) if you prefer. We are unable to fit emergency coils at the surgery.


To check you coil - please ask for a 10min routine appointment with Dr Holden or Dr Johnston.

To remove your coil - please ask for a 10min routine appointment with Dr Holden or Dr Johnston.


Contraceptive Implants

Dr Fionnuala Joyce can insert these. Please book a 20min appointment with Dr Joyce.

To check your implant please book a 10min routine appoitnment with Dr Joyce.

To remove your implant please book a 30min routine appoitnment with Dr Joyce.

Contraceptive Diaphragm

Dr Louise Rutter & Dr Melissa Holden can fit contraceptive diaphragms please book a 20min routine appointment with either of them.

Cervical Screening (Smears)

Cervical screening is offerred to all women between 25 and 65 years of age.

These can be carried out by any of our specially trained practice nurses. Please book a 20min routine appointment.

We operate a call and recall system and all our female patients between the age of 25 and 65 - they will be sent regular follow-up appointments to attend for cervical screening. If you have not had a smear within the last 3 years please ask for an appointment.

You will receive written notification of your smear result, usually within 8 weeks of the test.



Fertility awareness and natural family planning

If you are interested in learning more about your fertility signs to use this as a method – either to help you to maximise your chances of conception or as an effective way to avoid pregnancy, then please arrange an appointment with Jane Knight, our Fertility Nurse Specialist.
